However, this love affair comes at a high cost, as the pros and cons of America's gun culture clash in a deadly dance. The question that arises is whether the benefits truly outweigh the devastating consequences.
The Pros: Guardians of Freedom or Instruments of Tyranny?”
Advocates of gun ownership often argue that the right to bear arms is an essential pillar of their freedom, acting as a safeguard against potential government tyranny. This perspective harks back to the Americas’ humble beginnings when colonists used their privately owned firearms to rebel against British rule. Manufacturers, retailers, and related businesses generate billions of dollars in revenue, creating jobs and bolstering local economies. In rural areas, guns are often tools of survival, used for hunting and protecting livestock from predators. This makes it a need in the wild to survive.
Additionally, guns can provide a sense of empowerment, particularly for marginalized communities. Owning a firearm can level the playing field for individuals who might otherwise feel vulnerable and defenseless. For women, in particular, guns can provide a means of self-defense against potential assailants.
The Cons: A Deadly Toll on Society
While the advocates of gun ownership emphasize its benefits, the cons present a harrowing reality that cannot be ignored. The United States leads the developed world in gun-related deaths, with a staggering number of lives lost to gun violence each year. “Howdy neighbor. I got better guns than you dude, so now we can easily shoot each other”?
Did Messiah Jesus convince you to become a warring people? Was Jesus a gun-slinger? In the Bible, and the Quran, his interactions with the world around him demonstrate a commitment to nonviolence. A quote From the Bible - "Put your sword back into its place. For all who take the sword will perish by the sword." A quote From the Quran - “And the peace over me a day I born, and a day I die, and a day I brought out alive.”
These statements of Jesus, spread across at least two Books of God, function as a clear rejection of violence as a means of achieving one's ends.
Contrasting with Contemporary Gun Culture
In contrast to the message of nonviolence delivered by Messiah Jesus, son of Mary, Messenger of the God and His Word, America's gun culture perpetuates a mindset that stands at odds with these teachings. The glorification of firearms and readiness to employ lethal force undermines the pursuit of peace and the value of life. A culture where individuals are encouraged to take up arms and be ready to "take the other out with one bullet" runs counter to the message of compassion and forgiveness that Jesus advocated.
The focus on personal protection through firearms can also lead to a sense of fear and mistrust, which contradicts the biblical call to trust in the providence of God. Rather than fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility, a gun-centric culture can lead to a "survival of the fittest" mentality, further dividing society and harming the weak.
So where did all the real Christians go?
Pursuit of Peace
If America claims to be a Christian society that follows Jesus, then at least in the context of a gun culture, a serious call for a critical examination of priorities is needed. Otherwise, Americans are hypocrites. The concept of "turning the other cheek" challenges individuals to respond to aggression with kindness, forgiveness, and empathy. You can also go for, “An eye for an eye” and you can also choose to pass over, as mentioned in the Torah and the Quran.
This radical approach to peace goes against the instinctual response of retaliation or resorting to violence and revenge. It also stops us from acting like God because “Vengeance is of thy Lord.”
Embracing a life of peace aligns with what God has been teaching us through His Books and His Messengers throughout history and in more ways than just the absence of physical violence. It involves seeking acceptance, and reconciliation, addressing systemic injustices, and promoting the well-being of all members of society. Instead of relying on the power of weaponry, you are called to rely on the power of faith to bring about positive change.
Seeking Common Ground: Responsible Gun Ownership and Peacemaking
It's essential to recognize that the question at hand isn't about advocating for an outright ban on firearms or vilifying those who own them. Responsible gun ownership, consistent with the principles of safety and self-defense, can coexist with a commitment to peace. Striving for common ground involves fostering a culture of responsible gun ownership that respects the existence of another life and prioritizes conflict resolution over escalation.
The pursuit of peace doesn't imply passivity or a lack of agency. Instead, it involves proactive engagement with societal issues, advocating for justice, and creating a more compassionate and harmonious world with a peaceful environment.
When viewed through the lens of faith, the glorification of firearms and a culture that readily embraces violence contradicts the essence of what faith talks about.
A genuine commitment to change involves embracing a lifestyle that prioritizes peacemaking, forgiveness, and the pursuit of justice.
You also have the choice to separate peacefully and live individually, without having the need to kill the other, which can maybe lead to building a more compassionate society.
